Guangming Research & Design Institute of Chemical Industry, previously known as Guangming Chemical Research Institute of the Ministry of Chemical Industry, was established on June 1, 1964. This institute, located in Dalian, was the former research unit directly under the Ministry of Chemical Industry before it became a technical enterprise affiliated with China Haohua Chemical (Group) Corporation (CHC). As the only institute engaged in scientific research on special gases in China, it has embarked on compressive scientific institution integrating scientific research, production, design, development, technical service and quality evaluation. It is one of the important bases for special gases’ research, development and production in China.

Boasting of total assets of 47.65 million yuan and covering an area of 77,000 square meters, the institute, previously helped with national defense chemical engineering and war industry-related scientific research that has developed for over 43 years in six specialties: special gas products, source materials in micro-electrics and optoelectronics, gas and supercritical fluid engineering design and equipment, low temperature engineering technology, water treatment engineering technology, and insulated energy saving engineering technology. The institute completed over 500 scientific research projects and 203 of its scientific achievements were awarded prizes, of which 31 won national awards for scientific achievements, 85 achieved provincial (ministerial) awards of scientific advancement and 6 were registered as patents. Widely-used in chemical engineering, electronics, metallurgical machinery, medical care, scientific research and environmental protection, its products won widespread recognition and acclaim.

The institute has 230 employees, including 8 professional senior engineers, 42 senior engineers and 83 engineers.

The institute was granted import and export trading rights, passed the certification of ISO 9001: 2000 quality management system, and won the license for production, operation and transportation of hazardous chemicals.

It has worked out 6 national standards for electronic gas, 7 kinds of high purity electronic gases at the level of national secondary reference material, and other 26 kinds of gases at the level of national secondary reference material.

The institute is equipped with a scientific research center, the design institute, the special gas department, and the water-treatment technical center. It has established the Guangming Special Material Department in Hangzhou and Guangming Bonded New Technology Company in the Dalian Economic and Technological Development Zone.

Located in the Guangming Research & Design Institute of Chemical Industry, the Training Center of China Industrial Gases Industry Association (jointly launched by China Industrial Gases Industry Association and Guangming Research & Design Institute of Chemical Industry) is the training base for vocational education and on-the-job training for technical management personnel.

As early as the 1960s, the institute undertook R&D for the state’s liquid hydrogen—heavy water production and won the national science conference award for making outstanding contributions to the launch of China’s “Two Bombs and One Satellite.”

During the 6th Five-Year Plan (1980-1985), in order to meet China’s demands to produce the semiconductor integrated circuit and the ULSI, the technicians in the institute worked hard for many years and finally mastered a comprehensive technique for preparing electronic gases, an independent intellectual property. It enjoys rich experiences in synthesizing, purifying, analyzing and examining electronic gas, packing vessels, safety, and environmental protection. The institute remains in a leading position in electronic gas preparation in China.

As the indispensable source material in micro-electronics and optoelectronics, particularly the ULSI, the electronic gas is widely-used in the LED, non-crystalline silicon solar batteries, optical fibers, laser instrument, infrared detectors, high frequency surface wave radars and infrared thermal imagers. It could be used for precipitating, extending, diffusing, etching and cleaning microelectronic and optoelectronic products, and its quality directly decides the level of integration, special technology index and finished rate of microelectronic and optoelectronic components such as integrated circuits.

From the 7th Five-Year Plan (1986-1990) to 9th Five-Year Plan (1996-2000), the institute developed 15 types of high purity metal organic compounds (MO source) used for the state’s semi-conducting materials, the state’s Program 863. As the first organization in China to develop the MO source, this project was awarded the second prize for national scientific and technological progress.

During the 10th Five-Year Plan (2001-2005), the institute undertook the preparation and industrialized production of ultrapure ammonia in the state’s Program 863. Products have reached the US APCI standards in all indicators and are provided much to optoelectronics production and research organizations such as Epilight Technology Co., Ltd (the exclusive supplier of home-made products), Ministry of Aviation Industry, CETC’s research institutes and major national laboratories in China’s universities.

It undertook the State Commission of Science and Technology for National Defense Industry’s major projects and related items during the 10th Five-Year Plan period, to meet China’s demands for military and civil microelectronic and optoelectronic products. The completion of this project showed far-reaching significance for China to upgrade its optoelectronic products.

Since the 1980s, the institute has undertaken tasks of production for China’s aerospace engineering. Its products have been successfully used in China’s R&D and launch of “DFH-3 Satellite”, “Shengzhou V Spacecraft” and “Shengzhou VI Spacecraft”, making great contributions to China’s national defense and military industries. The institute has been praised by the state’s departments concerned and awarded with the second prize for scientific and technological progress from the former Ministry of Chemical Industry.

Electronic gases such as SiH 4, PH 3, B2 H6, SiH 2Cl 2, BCl 3, BF3, Cl 2, HCl, N2 O, H2S, high purity H2, N2 , O2 and Ar as well as electronic ultra-pure decontamination plant’s support device have captured numerous awards.

During the 11th Five-Year Plan (2006-2010), the institute focuses on R&D and industrialization of special gases and micro-electron and photoelectron source materials and keeps a leading position in China’s field of special gases, in order to make contributions for national defense and IC products.
